My dad and I would watch James Barber's cooking show all the time when I was growing up. One summer when I was 12 my family went to the Calgary Stampede. James Barber was going to be doing a cooking show and of course we had to watch it! We sat in the audience and James came out and asked "Who doesn't know how to cook". Being young and brave, I shot my had up in the air and to my surprise he invited me up on stage to cook with him. I can't remember what we cooked although it was the first time I teared up from cutting an onion. I aslo remember he tried to use a new hand blender and a piece of plastic flew into our food and had the audience laughing. I remember catching my dad's eye as he was so proud that I was up there with his cooking idol! At the end of the show James gave me a copy of his "Peasant's Alphabet" cookbook and in it he signed "To Jacqueline, the best of helpers - James Barber" Well. I'm old enough now to actually put it to use as most of his tasty receipes require wine. (And oh ya! My dad got to meet him after the show!) Somewhere I still have a picture of me with him.
